Simone Giai (April 9, 1998, Rivoli) began his artistic journey as a self-taught artist during his high school years, drawn to the world of graffiti. Through a spontaneous and experimental approach, he gradually integrated elements of analog photography into his work. One of the core techniques he embraces is Cyanotype, originally used for developing photographs. This method involves precise exposure to sunlight followed by a water rinse. Over time, Giai has reimagined Cyanotype, using it as a primary medium for painting and enriching it with natural elements such as turmeric and tannin, which modify the signature Prussian blue of the process. As his artistic practice evolved, Giai incorporated tools like spray cans, acrylics, pastels, and other materials that fuel his creative expression. This eclectic approach led to the development of a distinctive mixed media style. At its core, Giai’s work redefines a photographic printing technique, repurposing it not to develop images but to create paintings, an innovative fusion of photography and fine art. Growing up in the countryside at the foot of the mountains, Giai’s artistic vision is deeply influenced by a connection to nature’s essential elements. The sun plays a pivotal role in his process, as he experiments with different intensities of light exposure on his canvases. He creates softer tones by working with the early morning sunlight, when UV rays are gentler, and achieves deeper, more saturated hues by utilizing the midday sun at its peak strength. This process has become a ritualistic practice, reminiscent of ancient religions that revered the sun as a divine force. |
